A Breath of Fresh Air! CTC Math | Review

A few months ago, we decided it was time to change math curriculum. The boys had come to a point where they desired that instant feedback that an online curriculum could provide in this area. I had taken a look at CTC Math a while back, and after showing it to the twins, we took the leap and started a homeschool account.

After just a few days, we knew this was the curriculum they would use for quite some time, possibly through high school.

Getting started is easy. Visit CTCMath.com and either sign up for a free trial or go straight to “Join Now.” We started with the free trial, it allows you access to a small selection of lessons; it gave us the chance to see how it worked, and if it would work for us.

David is headed towards algebra, a decidedly unpleasant subject for me, and Daniel isn’t far behind. CTC Math makes math a much more pleasant experience, for which I am grateful! One of the things we really like about it is the fact that they can watch videos over and over again, if they still have trouble, usually I can watch the videos and also help.

Each video lesson is short and right to the point. It cuts out all the excess fluff present in some curricula (not just math!), and allows kids multiple options for figuring out the answer. In a couple of cases, a method did not work for the boys, but only a couple, and I knew another way that did. In fact, in some lessons, I learned a new way to do things that made more sense than the way I learned in school!

Each question kids answer gives instant feedback; the exception to that is some areas of algebra and geometry must be self-graded due to the nature of mathematics notation—it does not work well on a keyboard. That aside, the boys’ confidence level is up, and I can even take the lessons to be able to better help them.

The parent dashboard is also excellent. At a glance, I can tell if they have sloughed off their math this week, or if they are ahead. We have full control over the pace at which they work, giving them the access to harder lessons as they are ready—and more time when they need it.

All in all, CTC Math has been a breath of fresh air, and just as soon as I can, I’ll be upgrading from the monthly to the annual plan. I like the annual plan because we will save a little money, and only have to deal with the payment once a year. We started with monthly to be certain it was what they needed for math.

For homeschool families, the cost is either $19.97 per month, or $148.50 per year; you can find more at https://www.ctcmath.com/purchase/homeschool50.
